Isabel Vermeulen is a queer half-Filipino multidisciplinary artist who works in Calgary, Alberta, and has graduated from Alberta University of the Arts in 2022 with a BFA in sculpture. Her work explores traumatic events that affect one’s physical and mental health, such as sexual abuse, loss of one’s identity, and stalking. They utilize soft sculpture, fiber, ink paintings and photography as a method of compartmentalizing these events. Isabel recognizes the importance of these traumatic events as it is important to discuss these topics because they are prominently silenced by societal normalities.
